Can I use Respondus Lockdown Browser but allow them to use Excel?
Yes - but it isn't easy
Come see me
Does Respondus work on Mac?
Respondus Lockdown Browser does work on mac and monitor too
But not Respondus 4.0
Need a PC
So all of my students need to have PCs in order for me to use Responds 4.0?
I have a Pixelbook. Will that be a problem in setting up my exam in Respondus 4.0?
Just to clarify, using Respondus to create tests is just the same as creating tests on BB directly, right? In other words, just choose whichever is easier/more familiar, right?
What do you mean by saying we need to “format” the test if we want ldc to upload it?
can we upload an "essay" type of exam with diagrams like he file attached, without lock-down browser?
Do you include the answer?
How do we include figures or tables?
Can you show one more time how you got to that PDF on the Respondus page?
Can they freehand draw an answer with their cursor on a blackboard exam?
Perfect, thank you!
Like for figures
Amy Bergen Zerofski
can you show how to upload something into an exam? I need to put a pdf in
why can't why we just upload exam into blackboard and not go through respondus 4.0
Perfect! Thank you for he answer using file Response
Will the instructions on how to format an exam if I have a Mac be sent as well?
Ashley Corrigan Steffey
What version of Blackboard are we currently using? I can’t find it. I’m looking to use publisher resources and need to know the version.
I saw the example test…wanted to see how to format a simple multiple choice/TF test.
Can blackboard record student’s aural response?
in BB when creating an exam, for any item with an image, I had to save the graphics/tables as a JPEG file and then insert it.....is that similar to Respondus?
Zella: I'm seriously considering classifying my written eams as an "Assignment" with set start and stop times. Students will have to upload their pdf work
I'll give them an extra 5-10 minutes per exam
Great thank you!! I have to pop off but please send to firstname.lastname@example.org
After you design the exam, how can you see the student version to see if it is properly done?
is the exam timed?
Great idea Ernie!
Exam can be timed
Are there different instructions available if we have Blackboard Ultra?
Do we have to supply answers to short answer questions on Blackboard, or can I simply create short answer questions that I can grade myself?
I don't believe they have been created yet, but we will work on that.
Yes, true. Exams can be timed. My issue is that students will have to use diagrams and equations written by them. I am uncertain how exams of that type can be efficiently administered online.
You would make short answer and then grade themselves.
You can upload graphics to blackboard - as questions or students can upload graphics as answers
For Blackboard Ultra I'm told everything is the same once you click on the Zoom link
The most efficient way that I've tried is to run the exam as a timed assignment and allow them to upload the whole thing
That's one way! Another would be to make all the M/C one test (automatically graded) and then leave essay for you to grade at your convenience
When questions are randomized and they come from a pool of questions, what happens if I give multiple attempts? Do they see the same questions? Or they see a different set of questions on the second attempt?
Can you set different time amounts for different students?
Can we do listening comprehension exam?
That part is coming up
Listening Comprehension - I do no know
Can you give individual student different length of time - some students have received permission to have longer time for test.
what happens when students lose connection or computer glitch during the exam? If we uncheck "force completion", and the exam is timed, when the student log back in, can they still continue with the exam if there is still time left for the exam?
Yes, you most definitely can do that.
Listening Comprehension: You could upload an audio file for your students to listen to, then answer the question. You have to link the audio file in the question area.
See tjat test availablity exceptions? thats where you do it
What if I have 3 sessions? They are supposed to have the exam at three different time slots
I know language dept. that have done that before.
Yes, you can do that (audio comp). You can upload audio files (again as both tests and answers)
why we need the password? I thought only students who take the course can see the tests.
If I make a test available today (3/17) but I set the display dates/times for the two hour exam for tomorrow (3/18) between 9 - 11 am, can I assume students can't start the exam until tomorrow morning?
You dont need a password - only if you want one
Yes, that would be safe to assume
yes, only students in the course see the test. password is optional. some instructor had provided passwords to make students attend class.
but you said the key thing - it has to be AVAILABLE for it to display
Dale: that is correct
If you make the Available NO, it will never display
Is there a way to give each student specific comments on each of their short answer questions?
Yes. Easy to do.
What if the students want to ask me questions about the exam?
They will need to email you
is there anyway a student may be able record the test and pass the questions to other students?
They can just take a screenshot, right?
They can take photos with their cellphone and share them with others
Amy Bergen Zerofski
After I've already uploaded the test, to make answers sort randomly, do I need to edit each question individually?
No. There is a setting for that.
Just be careful using "all of the above" and "a and b are correct"
Yes, they can take pics with their phones - we can only do so much! lol
Or they may have posters IN FRONT of them!
If we use respondus monitor, we could spend 30 hours watching the video of each student taking the exam and then punish them for taking photos! That would be a great way to spend all our free time!
Respondus marks any unusual behavior for you. You don't have to watch all the videos. Although, it sometimes misses marking some things that it should.
If you use Respondus Monitor it will tag anything suspicous for you.
There's no way to force "all of the above" to be the last choice?
If I want students to upload their solutions (using File Response), can they still use Respondus Monitor? Will Lockdown Browser allow them to upload their files?
So if they bend down at 33minutes, it will alert you on that.
No way to force All of the above
can say "all answers are correct"
I also love "both A and B" and "neither A nor B" but those have to come last also
I know at UCSD they had their final exams this week and some profs were using some video-recording proctoring tool and students were all very upset and complaining. They ended up not using it.
Good to know. Nothing like experience.
I've talked to quite a few instructors who have used the lockdown browser & monitor and no longer do so....
Would they object to being required to be logged into a zoom session while taking the exam?
Thats a good solution!
Dale, why not?
But there you are spending all your time watchin them. You can have the whole class log in to a zoom session and watch them all.
That's what happens when I proctor in person anyway
I just watch them
IF you have students taking exams on an iPad, you have to check the box to allow that
I've used Respondus lockdown browser and monitor before for an online course and it was actually pretty good. But, I am very concerned that our students at USD won't like it when it's being introduced to them like this in the middle of the semester.
Does the lockdown browser work on ipad?
1) If students really want to cheat they will find a way (i.e, they view it as a challenge as opposed to intimidating!); 2) one prof who used it found the distribution of scores was not markedly different when using it vs not); 3) it can be a technological pain when all does not flow well for a timed test
Lockdown browser works on ipad
Dale, thanks! :)
Even if they make a chart and put it in front of themselves, their info may be bad!
Faculty who want to use Respondus Monitor should first check with their Dean because some students may not be able to deploy cameras. so this may be an academic policy issue.
If we use Respondus 4.0 to upload exams, do students need to download respondus 4.0 as well?
where is the USD’s Honor Code, we can copy?
re: honor code!....yes yes yes!....I have an exam I"m giving at UCSD tomorrow and I crafted an integrity pledge that all students have to respond via email their adherence....
No. REspondus 4.0 is only used to UPLOAD the exam to bb
I'll have to check where USD Honor Code is
is it easy to import BB exam for future use?
importing from a previous course?
Academic Integrity also has a one sentence that says I have neither received nor given assistance on this exam
As an FYI, I gave the students the option to take their midterms online. I emailed their exams and they had to submit it back within a specified time and told them they would lose points if it didn't come back on time. I had them affirm that they would not cheat. Anyway, I did not see any cheating. I was very impressed!
Can the honor code question be worth zero points?
yes it can
You can upload an exam and not make a link to it but its there for future use
You can make a question with zero points - so yes
Thank you Ashley!
Every single question!
How are the test banks uploaded in order to create pools? Is that something you can help with?
Yep. You can upload questions into pool too. Then you can specify a certain number from each "pool" for the final or something. Each one can be different questions too..
Can you choose the questions in the pool? Not all are good
No but you can get rid of the bad ones.
Did Ashley mean to share her screen?
I have a Mac and just want to check that, we can have short answer and essay questions in an exam, create that exam through blackboard and able to use respondus browser lockdown and monitor??
That will work!
Lockdown monitor works on Mac and so does all the testing featuress
Prohibit Backtracking, if we don’t do this, can students be able to change their answers to earlier questions?
